An underground railway tunnel connecting the Łódź Fabryczna station with Łódź Kaliska and Łódź Żabieniec: a double-track section 3 km long and four single-track tunnels with a total length of 4.5 km, with new underground stops in the city center. The tender was announced in November 2016, the contract with the PBDiM consortium from Mińsk Mazowiecki (PLN 1.59 billion) was signed at the end of 2017, and boring began in 2019. After a tenement house above the route of the TBM machine collapsed in September 2024, boring was suspended – the shield has remained immobilized since November 2024. In February 2026, PKP PLK withdrew from the contract with the contractor; the selection of a new one is underway (a tender at the turn of Q3 and Q4 2026). The cost grew from approx. PLN 1.3 billion net to approx. PLN 2.3 billion, and completion was pushed back from 2022 to the turn of 2030 and 2031.

Significance

The tunnel is intended to enable railway traffic through the center of Łódź: beyond the Łódź Fabryczna station the route splits north to the Łódź Żabieniec station and south to the Łódź Kaliska station, and new underground stops are being built in the city center (including at the junction of Zielona, Zachodnia and Kościuszki streets and at Ogrodowa, Karskiego and Drewnowska streets). The investment transforms Łódź Fabryczna from a terminal station into a through station, tying together the Łódź railway junction.
