ORLEN Maritime Transshipment Terminal on the Martwa Wisła at the Gdańsk Refinery

A new maritime transshipment terminal of the ORLEN Group built on the quay of the Martwa Wisła, directly at the Gdańsk Refinery (Pomorskie Voivodeship). The facility comprises an approx. 380-metre quay with two berths equipped with eight automated, bidirectional loading arms and a pipeline system connecting the terminal with the refinery's installations. The terminal can accommodate vessels up to 130 m in length. The target handling capacity is to reach up to 2 million tonnes of products per year — biocomponents for fuel production (including ethanol, MTBE, ETBE, FAME/UCOME), base oils, low-sulphur marine fuel (MGO), and refinery intermediates. Construction was carried out by a consortium led by the Sopot-based NDI Group. Work began in 2023, with the terminal originally expected to be commissioned in 2025. After construction was completed in 2026, commissioning and transshipment tests were carried out, and in June 2026 the first commercial transshipment was performed; the first commercial vessels were announced for July 2026, and full operational launch for the second half of 2026.

Significance

The terminal is intended to be the maritime "export window" of the Gdańsk Refinery — it enables the direct loading and unloading of products by water, without the intermediation of a rail terminal, relieving the refinery's land logistics. It increases supply security through its own channel for importing biocomponents and components essential to fuel production, and for exporting petroleum products and base oils. The target throughput of around 2 million tonnes per year and the handling of low-sulphur marine fuel (MGO) strengthen Gdańsk's position in maritime fuel logistics and support biofuel production within the ORLEN Group.
