Szczecin Metropolitan Railway

A rapid metropolitan rail programme in the Szczecin Metropolitan Area, based on the modernization of existing railway lines nos. 406, 273, 351 and 401, connecting Szczecin with Police, Stargard, Gryfino and Goleniów. The beneficiary of EU funds and the coordinator is the Association of the Szczecin Metropolitan Area, infrastructure works are carried out by PKP PLK, and services are organized by the Zachodniopomorskie Voivodeship. The investment is being carried out in two phases with a combined value of approx. PLN 1.35 billion, with EU co-financing. The project is heavily delayed relative to the original plans, and in its report the Supreme Audit Office (NIK) assessed the preparation and oversight negatively; the cost of the task rose by nearly 40 percent in 2022 alone. The launch of regular services on the most neglected line to Police has been postponed to the turn of 2026/2027.

Significance

Once completed, the system is to provide fast, regular rail connections between Szczecin and the municipalities of the metropolitan area (Police, Stargard, Gryfino, Goleniów), with a network of modernized and new stops and stations, improving the accessibility of public transport and reducing car traffic on approaches to the city.
