Reconstruction of national road DK18 to A18 motorway standard (southern carriageway)

completed stage: operational delivered
900 mln PLN
programme budget (multi-year) · data from Oct 2023 ≈ 900 mln PLN (value-by-stage, est., nominal)

The reconstruction of the southern carriageway of the former national road No. 18 (a pre-war concrete route colloquially known as the "road of shame") to A18 motorway standard, on the section from the state border with Germany in Olszyna to the Golnice junction in Lower Silesia. As a result of the second stage of the investment, the entire dual-carriageway A18 motorway, 70 km long and running through the Lubuskie and Dolnośląskie voivodeships, obtained motorway parameters and status. The investor was the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA). The works included a new surface for the southern carriageway as well as the reconstruction and construction of bridge structures; the last, more than 20-kilometer section from the border of the Lubuskie and Dolnośląskie voivodeships to the Golnice junction was made available to drivers on 13 October 2023, completing the entire investment.

Significance

The completion of the reconstruction of the southern carriageway finished the construction of the A18 motorway along its entire 70-kilometer length from the border with Germany in Olszyna to the Golnice junction, eliminating the notoriously degraded pre-war concrete surface criticized by drivers. The modern dual-carriageway route improves international transit traffic toward Berlin and the connection of western Poland (the Lubuskie and Dolnośląskie voivodeships) with the motorway network. The investment, worth nearly PLN 900 million, included a new surface as well as the reconstruction and construction of bridge structures.
