The eastern part of the Warsaw Southern Bypass (POW) along the S2 expressway on the section from the Puławska junction to the Lubelska junction, built by GDDKiA and divided into three construction sections (A, B, C) with a total length of over 18 km. The heart of the investment is a twin-bore tunnel under the Ursynów district, approximately 2.3 km long, the longest road tunnel in Poland at the time of its opening. Sections B (Przyczółkowa–Wał Miedzeszyński with a bridge over the Vistula) and C (Wał Miedzeszyński–Lubelska with viaducts over the Mazowiecki Landscape Park) were made available to drivers in December 2020, and section A with the tunnel under Ursynów, which completed the whole, was opened on 20 December 2021. The total cost of the three sections amounted to approximately PLN 4.6 billion, of which nearly PLN 1.7 billion was co-financing from EU funds under the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment.

Significance

The investment completed the Warsaw Southern Bypass along the S2, directing transit traffic (including eastbound towards the Lubelska junction and further to the A2) away from densely built-up districts of the capital. The twin-bore tunnel under Ursynów, approximately 2.3 km long, was the longest road tunnel in Poland at the time of its opening and allowed the expressway to be routed under a populated district without cutting through it. At a cost of approximately PLN 4.6 billion, with nearly PLN 1.7 billion of EU co-financing, it was one of the largest urban road investments in Poland.
