Polskie Porty Lotnicze, a State Treasury company, is running a programme to modernize and expand Chopin Airport in Warsaw (Okęcie) – the largest airport in Poland – to increase its capacity for the transitional period before the Central Communication Port opens. Under the investment, the number of parking stands for narrow-body aircraft is to grow from 62 to 83, for wide-body aircraft from 15 to 24, and the passenger terminal floor area from 165,000 to 189,115 m2; the target capacity is approx. 30 million passengers per year. The original cost estimate (PLN 1.6 billion) was lowered – according to PPL the works are to cost PLN 940 million plus a 40 percent reserve for unforeseen expenditures. In December 2025 PPL announced a tender for the reconstruction of the terminal and the southern pier (deadline for submitting applications by 2 February 2026), and in February 2026 a loan agreement for PLN 3.3 billion was signed with a consortium of banks Pekao, PKO BP and BGK, covering both the modernization of Chopin and the construction of Port Polska. Signing of the contract with the contractor is planned for April 2027, and delivery of the modernized infrastructure for 2029.

Significance
The modernization is to secure the capacity of Poland's largest airport in the period until the opening of the Central Communication Port, so that – as PPL argues – it does not lose millions of passengers who would otherwise seek other airports. The expansion increases the terminal by approx. 15 percent of floor area (to 189,115 m2), the number of stands for wide-body aircraft by more than 60 percent (from 15 to 24), and for narrow-body aircraft by more than 30 percent (from 62 to 83), raising the airport's target capacity to approx. 30 million passengers per year. The investment is strategically tied to the schedule of the Central Communication Port and the construction of Port Polska – financed jointly from the PLN 3.3 billion loan – and its relatively low cost (PLN 940 million plus reserve) is presented as an economical, bridging solution maintaining air traffic in Warsaw for the coming years.
