Warsaw Metro — Line 1 (M1) Kabaty–Młociny
The first metro line in Warsaw (M1), running from the Kabaty estate in the Ursynów district north to the Młociny interchange in Bielany. Construction began on 15 April 1983 with the driving of the first steel pile of a Berlin-type retaining wall in Ursynów. The first section (Kabaty–Politechnika) was put into service on 7 April 1995, and subsequent stretches of the route were opened in stages over the following years. The entire line — from Kabaty to Młociny — was completed on 25 October 2008, after 25 years of construction. The route has 21 stations and a length of 23.1 km. The infrastructure is managed by the municipal company Metro Warszawskie Sp. z o.o., 100% of whose shares belong to the Capital City of Warsaw.

Significance
Line M1 was the first and for years the only metro section in Poland, as well as one of the largest post-war transport investments in Warsaw, carried out in stages over a quarter of a century. It created a transport backbone connecting the densely populated Ursynów and Bielany estates with the city centre. After completion the line became one of the most intensively used public transport routes in the country — according to operational data it is used by on the order of 216–609 thousand passengers per day. The construction and operation of M1 became the basis of experience for building subsequent lines of the Warsaw metro.
