A programme to complete and expand metro line II in Warsaw, conducted by the City of Warsaw and Metro Warszawskie. After the central section opened in 2015, the M2 line was extended in stages to the east (Trocka 2019, Zacisze–Bródno 2022) and to the west (2020, Bemowo 2022). The final, approximately 4-kilometre western section, with the Lazurowa, Chrzanów, and Karolin stations plus the Karolin technical and stabling station, is being built by Gülermak; following a 2023 addendum, the value of this contract rose from PLN 1.3 to PLN 1.95 billion net, and the completion date for the entire investment was pushed to 9 November 2026. Ultimately the line is to comprise 21 stations, and the cost of building all sections together with rolling stock is estimated at approximately PLN 10 billion; stage II of the expansion was co-financed by the EU Cohesion Fund (EUR 432.3 million).

Significance

The M2 line forms the second, east-west axis of the Warsaw metro; once all 21 stations are delivered it will connect Bemowo with Bródno. Successive sections received EU funding (including EUR 432 million from the Cohesion Fund for the expansion stage and PLN 1.125 billion for the western section), while the final, approximately 4-kilometre segment in Bemowo incurred a delay of about four years relative to the original deadline.
