Construction of stage III of the Krakow Fast Tram — a line approximately 5.5 km long of double track (approximately 11 km of track) connecting the Krowodrza Górka loop with the Górka Narodowa housing estate in the northern part of Krakow. The route was designed and built by a consortium of Intercor and Tor-Krak under a contract signed on 22 May 2017. The investment included, among other things, a two-level integrated interchange hub with a P+R car park and a bus terminal at Górka Narodowa, a road tunnel along Opolska Street, and further Park & Ride car parks. The total value of the project amounted to approximately PLN 595 million, of which approximately PLN 184 million was funding from the EU Cohesion Fund (OPI&E 2014–2020), and PLN 38 million came from the government programme supporting preparations for the 3rd European Games. Trams began running on the new route in September 2023.

Significance

The new line completed the northern section of the fast tram in Krakow and shortened travel time from the densely populated estates north of Opolska Street (Górka Narodowa, Prądnik Biały) to the city centre, connecting them to the KST network with Park & Ride car parks encouraging travellers to switch from cars. Uptake proved high from the outset — in the first month more than half a million passengers used the new connection. However, delivery was significantly delayed: the 2017 contract assumed construction within approximately 3.5 years, yet the trams did not begin running until September 2023.
