A2 Motorway (Świecko–Poznań–Łódź–Warsaw section)

A key east–west road corridor linking the Polish-German border at Świecko through Poznań and Łódź with Warsaw, being the Polish segment of a European corridor (the E30 road). The Świecko–Warsaw route was completed for the UEFA EURO 2012 European football championship (2012). The western section Świecko–Nowy Tomyśl, 105.905 km long, whose construction began in July 2009, was opened to traffic on 1 December 2011 (ahead of schedule); it was delivered by the concessionaire Autostrada Wielkopolska II S.A., with the general contractor being A2Strada (Kulczyk Holding and Strabag AG). The Łódź–Warsaw section (from the Stryków interchange to the Konotopa interchange), approximately 90 km long, managed by GDDKiA, was made passable on 6 June 2012, just before EURO 2012, enabling drivers to use the entire A2 motorway between Warsaw and Łódź. The Świecko–Konin section is tolled and maintained by the concessionaire Autostrada Wielkopolska, while the Konin–Warsaw section is maintained by GDDKiA.

Significance

The completion of the A2 motorway on the Świecko–Warsaw route ahead of UEFA EURO 2012 connected Warsaw and central Poland with the motorway network toward the border with Germany, creating the primary national east–west road corridor. The last missing element was the Łódź–Warsaw section (Stryków–Konotopa, approximately 90 km), managed by GDDKiA and made passable on 6 June 2012, the day before the tournament's opening ceremony; the western section Świecko–Nowy Tomyśl (105.905 km) had already been operational since 1 December 2011. The investment was carried out under a mixed model: the tolled concession section Świecko–Konin (concessionaire Autostrada Wielkopolska) and the government section Konin–Warsaw maintained by GDDKiA.
