Purchase of Pendolino ED250 trains (PKP Intercity)

Purchase of 20 Alstom New Pendolino electric multiple units (designated ED250 in Poland) by PKP Intercity. On 30 May 2011, PKP Intercity signed a contract worth EUR 665 million (PLN 2.64 billion) with Alstom Transport, covering the delivery of 20 seven-car New Pendolino trains, the construction of technical facilities at the Warszawa Grochów depot station, and technical maintenance of the trains for a period of up to 17 years. The trainsets were manufactured at Alstom's plant in Savigliano, Italy. Service on Express InterCity Premium routes began on 14 December 2014. The maximum operating speed reached by the trainsets on the Polish network is 200 km/h.

Significance

The Pendolino ED250 became the flagship train of PKP Intercity and a symbol of Polish railways entering the era of high-speed passenger connections. The fleet of 20 trainsets serves Express InterCity Premium connections linking Warsaw with, among others, Gdańsk, Wrocław, Katowice and Krakow, as well as with smaller centres such as Rzeszów, Gliwice, Bielsko-Biała and Kołobrzeg. During the first ten years of operation (2014–2024), the ED250 trainsets carried more than 39 million passengers and covered a total of approximately 70 million kilometres, running an average of about 22 thousand km per day.
