Construction of an approx. 16 km mountain section of the S3 expressway, Bolków – Kamienna Góra, in Lower Silesia, forming part of the S3 Legnica (A4) – Lubawka task that closes the Polish part of the S3 corridor toward the border with the Czech Republic. The route was led through the ranges of the Sudetes with numerous engineering structures, including two twin-bore tunnels: TS-26, approx. 2,300 m long (the longest non-urban tunnel bored in rock in Poland), and TS-32, approx. 320 m long. GDDKiA's Wrocław branch signed the design-and-build contract in October 2018, and boring of the TS-26 tunnel was carried out from December 2020 to February 2022. The contractor was a consortium of PORR (leader) and PORR Bau GmbH. The section was opened to traffic on 31 July 2024. The value of the investment came to over PLN 1,785 million, of which approx. PLN 928 million was funding from the EU Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment.

Significance

The Bolków – Kamienna Góra section closed the Polish part of the S3 expressway in the Sudetes, providing a continuous expressway connection along the north–south corridor from the Baltic coast toward the border with the Czech Republic. The key element of the route is the twin-bore TS-26 tunnel, approx. 2,300 m long (the longest non-urban tunnel bored in rock in Poland), which, together with the shorter TS-32 tunnel and numerous viaducts, enabled the road to be carried through difficult mountain terrain. The investment, worth over PLN 1,785 million and co-financed from EU funds with approx. PLN 928 million, improved transport accessibility in Lower Silesia and strengthened the cross-border transport corridor of the TEN-T network.
