Expansion of Warsaw-Modlin Airport (Stages I and II)

under construction stage: construction
500 mln PLN
programme budget (multi-year) · data from Dec 2024 ≈ 500 mln PLN (value-by-stage, est., nominal)

The expansion programme for Warsaw-Modlin Airport (Mazowiecki Port Lotniczy Warszawa-Modlin, approx. 37 km from the centre of Warsaw) envisages increasing the airport's capacity to 7-8 million passengers per year, compared with approx. 3.5 million handled in 2023. The first stage, valued at nearly PLN 500 million, includes expanding the terminal on the western and eastern sides (doubling the number of gates from four to eight), modernising the baggage sorting facility, the taxiways, and completing the car parks. In parallel, in response to the rapid growth in traffic (in January 2026 the airport handled approx. 218 thousand passengers, 96 percent more year on year), the airport is building an additional, temporary terminal with a steel structure and a membrane roof for approx. PLN 5.4 million, planned for delivery before the 2026 holiday season.

Significance

The expansion responds to the dynamic growth in traffic at Modlin, which in 2026 is one of the fastest-growing Polish airports. Ultimately, the first stage will raise capacity to 7-8 million passengers per year, roughly double the traffic of 2023 (approx. 3.5 million). Further stages are being considered over the longer term, with a target on the order of a dozen to twenty million passengers per year. The investment is accompanied by improved transport accessibility to the airport, including a junction with the S7 expressway and a planned railway line to the Modlin-Lotnisko station.
