Expansion of Kraków Airport (New Investment Plan: Terminal Stage I + New Runway)

under construction stage: construction
4.2 bn PLN
programme budget (multi-year) · data from Feb 2026 ≈ 4.2 bn PLN (value-by-stage, est., nominal)

The New Investment Plan of Kraków Airport (John Paul II International Airport Kraków-Balice) comprises 19 tasks with a total value of approx. PLN 4.2 billion and is the largest expansion programme in the history of the Balice airport. A key element is the construction of a new part of the passenger terminal (T6) with an area of nearly 45,000 m², with 11 new gates, 54 passport control booths, and 20 ABC gates. The contract for the terminal expansion, worth PLN 537.7 million, was signed on 13 May 2026 with the contractor Mostostal Warszawa SA; the new part is planned to be brought into use in mid-2029. The plan also provides for the construction of a new runway and the modernisation of the apron and airfield infrastructure. All stages of the programme are to be completed by 2032.

Significance

The expansion is intended to address the overload of Kraków Airport — the second-largest airport in Poland and the largest regional one. After the new part of the terminal is brought into use (approx. 2029), the airport is to handle up to 16 million passengers per year, and after completion of all stages by 2032, more than 20 million. The new runway and modernisation of the apron are intended to remove the infrastructural barriers limiting further growth of traffic in Balice.
