The HBO Project (Hydrocracking Oil Block) is a strategic investment by the ORLEN Group carried out at the refinery in Gdańsk (Pomorskie Voivodeship), which is part of the assets of the former LOTOS Group acquired after the merger. The new installation complex is intended to enable the production of up to 400 thousand tons per year of high-quality Group II base oils, used to make engine and lubricating oils in industry and automotive transport, and, in addition, fuel intermediates, gasoline, and diesel oil. Construction of the main installation and accompanying facilities began in August 2022; at the end of June 2024, the progress of the entire project stood at approximately 70 percent. According to the schedule, the technological start-up of the main installation was to begin no later than the fourth quarter of 2025, and the installations are to reach full operational capacity in the first half of 2026. The value of the investment is estimated at more than PLN 1.8 billion.

Significance

The installation is intended to be Poland's first source of Group II base oils, reducing the domestic market's dependence on imports of these high-quality products. The target capacity of up to 400 thousand tons per year will make it possible to supply producers of engine oils and lubricants for industry and the automotive sector, while the additional production of fuel intermediates, gasoline, and diesel oil strengthens the processing potential of the Gdańsk refinery. The investment constitutes one of the key elements of the modernization of the former LOTOS Group assets within the ORLEN Group.
