A planned open-pit lignite mine at the Złoczew deposit in Łódzkie Voivodeship was to supply raw material to the Bełchatów power plant, located approx. 50 km away, once the plant's own reserves were exhausted. The project by PGE, which had for years drawn opposition from residents and environmental organisations, was never realised: on 7 January 2025 the Minister of Climate and Environment refused to grant a mining concession. PGE itself had earlier assessed extraction from the deposit as permanently unprofitable and does not plan to mine lignite there.
On 7 January 2025, the Minister of Climate and Environment, acting as the concession-granting authority, refused PGE Górnictwo i Energetyka Konwencjonalna a concession to extract lignite from the Złoczew deposit. The decision ended years of efforts to open the mine, which was to supply the Bełchatów power plant. Significance
Abandoning the open-pit mine means leaving in the ground documented lignite reserves estimated at several hundred million tonnes and ending a decade-plus period of uncertainty for the residents of the Złoczew, Burzenin, Ostrówek, and Lututów municipalities, where the investment threatened resettlement.
