The first line of a planned heavy-rail metro in Krakow — the largest transport investment in the city's history. After the plan was presented by Mayor Aleksander Miszalski (2024) and the routes of lines M1 and M2 were selected (24 September 2025), the city entered the preparatory phase: in July 2026 a tender was announced for preparing pre-design documentation (feasibility studies, technical concept, ground surveys and environmental documents), for which PLN 188 million was secured in the budget and the Multi-Year Financial Forecast for 2026–2031. Ultimately the network is to comprise two lines with a total length of approx. 29 km and 29 stations; line M1 is to connect Nowa Huta with Opatkowice. The estimated cost of the first line is approx. PLN 13 billion, and of the entire investment PLN 13–15 billion. Selection of the documentation contractor and signing of the contract are planned for the first quarter of 2027, and the announcement of the construction tender no later than 2030.

Significance
The first metro line is intended to give Krakow fast rail transport independent of street traffic and to relieve the overburdened tram and bus network in a city that has struggled for years with air pollution and congestion. The eventual two-line network is — according to the city's declarations — to serve approx. 280 thousand passengers per day and connect eastern Nowa Huta with the southern (Opatkowice, Kurdwanów) and western districts. It would be the second heavy-rail metro system in Poland after Warsaw.
