Construction of a visbreaking unit at the ORLEN refinery in Płock, intended to deepen crude oil processing through conversion of vacuum residue. A turnkey contract for design, supply and construction worth approximately PLN 750 million was signed on 5 February 2020 with a consortium of KTI Poland S.A. and IDS-BUD S.A. The investment is intended to increase the yield of high-margin products (gasoline and diesel). The original completion date (end of 2022) was postponed multiple times — by amendment to mid-2023, and according to the schedule from February 2024, completion of construction works was planned for May 2024.

Significance

Once completed, the unit is intended to enable the processing of vacuum residue — until now used to produce heavy fuel oils and asphalt — into high-margin products, i.e. gasoline and diesel. According to ORLEN, the expected increase in EBITDA operating profit is PLN 340-415 million per year.
