under construction stage: commissioning
3.2 bn EUR
programme budget (multi-year) ≈ 14 bn PLN (value-by-stage, est., nominal) funding: European Investment Bank loan EUR 480 million (2020)

The European Union's largest gigafactory for lithium-ion cells for electric vehicles, operated by LG Energy Solution Wrocław in Biskupice Podgórne near Wrocław, ultimately with a production capacity of around 100 GWh. The facility is being progressively expanded: alongside the automotive cell lines, new lines are being launched for the production of energy storage systems (ESS) based on lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, the first of which are due to start in the second half of 2025. The plant is the manufacturer and supplier of cells for PGE's large-scale energy storage facility in Żarnowiec (approx. 981 MWh).

Significance

The EU's largest factory for lithium-ion cells for electric vehicles, employing 9,500 people, with a target production capacity of about 100 GWh. The expansion with LFP cell lines and ESS systems strengthens the European energy storage supply chain — the plant supplies cells for PGE's energy storage facility in Żarnowiec with a capacity of about 981 MWh, a key element of Poland's energy transition.
