A1 Motorway Tuszyn–Częstochowa (completion of the A1)

programme budget (multi-year) ≈ 3.7 bn PLN (value-by-stage, est., nominal) funding: state budget, EU – Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme (up to PLN 1,698,156,864.29)

Construction of the last, approximately 80.72 km missing segment of the A1 motorway between the Tuszyn interchange and the start of the Częstochowa bypass, routed along the alignment of the former national road No. 1 (the "gierkówka"). The investment was carried out by GDDKiA, divided into five sections under the "design and build" system. The result is a dual-carriageway road with a concrete surface, with a target layout of three (in places four) lanes in each direction plus a hard shoulder. Successive sections were opened to traffic in 2021, completing the A1 along its full length; the target three-lane cross-section was finished in 2022. The total value of the project came to approximately PLN 3.70 billion, of which nearly PLN 1.70 billion was co-financing from EU funds.

Significance

The Tuszyn–Częstochowa section completed the A1 motorway along its full length, replacing the overloaded and accident-prone former national road No. 1 (the "gierkówka") and creating a continuous north–south motorway corridor from the Tricity area to the border with the Czech Republic. With a total value of approximately PLN 3.70 billion and nearly PLN 1.70 billion in EU co-financing, it was one of the largest road investments completing the TEN-T network in Poland. The use of a concrete surface and a target three-lane cross-section significantly increased the capacity and safety of transit on this route.
