A multifunctional national stadium in Warsaw's Praga-Południe district, at al. ks. J. Poniatowskiego, built as a State Treasury investment for the UEFA Euro 2012 European Football Championship. Construction began on 7 October 2008, and the official inauguration of the facility took place on 29 January 2012. The stands hold over 58,000 seats for matches, and in a concert configuration the arena can accommodate even around 80,000 people. The construction cost was given as PLN 1,976,061,375 (excluding land and compensation, as of 2013). Since 1 January 2013 the operator has been the company PL.2012+, wholly owned by the State Treasury; since July 2015 the facility has operated under the sponsorship name PGE Narodowy.

Significance

The National Stadium was the largest single investment in an entertainment and sports facility in Poland's history, carried out for the needs of UEFA Euro 2012 – the tournament co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine. After the championship ended, the arena became the country's main multifunctional venue, hosting national team matches, concerts, and mass events for tens of thousands of spectators. Maintaining the facility also involved operating costs: in November 2022 a defect was detected in one of the elements of the steel-cable roof structure, due to which the stadium was temporarily closed, with reopening taking place in December 2022.
