The new headquarters of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra (NOSPR), erected at plac Wojciecha Kilara 1 in Katowice on the grounds of the former "Katowice" Hard Coal Mine, within the emerging Culture Zone adjacent to the International Congress Centre and the Silesian Museum. The investor was the City of Katowice, and the building was designed by architect Tomasz Konior, selected in an international competition (decided on 15 December 2008); the general contractor was the Warsaw firm Warbud. Construction began in February 2012, and the ceremonial opening of the facility took place on 1 October 2014, on International Music Day. The building houses a grand concert hall and a chamber hall. The total cost of the project "Construction of the headquarters of the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice" was given as PLN 305,364,372.55, with funding from the European Regional Development Fund (Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment) in the amount of PLN 145,560,876.78 and an own contribution from the City of Katowice of PLN 159,803,495.77.

Significance

The NOSPR headquarters is one of the most important cultural investments carried out in Katowice after 1990 and co-forms the post-industrial Culture Zone on the grounds of the former "Katowice" Hard Coal Mine, alongside the Silesian Museum and the International Congress Centre. It provided the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra with a dedicated grand concert hall along with a separate chamber hall, designed with the acoustics of symphonic music in mind. The investment, led by the City of Katowice and co-financed with European Union funds, became part of the transformation of Katowice's city centre from post-mining land into public and cultural space.
