A programme to acquire two optical imagery reconnaissance satellites for the Polish Armed Forces, forming part of the Pléiades Neo constellation, together with a ground segment. The contract between the Armament Agency of the Ministry of National Defence and Airbus Defence & Space was signed on 27 December 2022. The satellites are to provide the acquisition of reconnaissance data (IMINT) with an accuracy of up to 30 cm, and a dedicated ground component for receiving and processing imagery was located at the Imagery Reconnaissance Centre in Białobrzegi. The launch of the Polish satellites into orbit is planned by 2027.

Significance

The programme gives the Polish Armed Forces their own, independent space-based imagery reconnaissance capabilities with a resolution of up to 30 cm, reducing dependence on data obtained from foreign partners. Incorporating the Polish satellites into the Pléiades Neo constellation and launching a national ground segment in Białobrzegi increases the ability to monitor areas of interest and supports both defence and civilian tasks (including early warning of natural hazards).
