Expansion of the Wierzchowice Underground Gas Storage Facility to 2.1 billion m3
Expansion of Poland's largest underground gas storage facility (PMG) in Wierzchowice in Lower Silesia, carried out by the ORLEN Group. The investment increases the facility's working capacity by 800 million m3 — from the previous 1.3 billion m3 to 2.1 billion m3. The scope of work includes, among other things, drilling new wells and expanding the gas injection and withdrawal infrastructure; injection capacity is to rise by one third to 19.2 million m3 per day, and withdrawal capacity by 66 percent to 24 million m3 per day. Work began in August 2023 with the drilling of the first well, and completion is planned for the turn of 2025 and 2026. The estimated cost of the investment is approx. PLN 576 million. Upon completion, the total capacity of the country's gas storage facilities will increase by approx. 25 percent and exceed 4 billion m3.

Significance
The expansion increases the working capacity of the Wierzchowice PMG to 2.1 billion m3, so that the facility will hold about half of the country's gas storage capacity. The total capacity of Poland's storage facilities will increase by approx. 25 percent and exceed 4 billion m3, strengthening the country's energy security. Higher injection capacity (up to 19.2 million m3/day) and withdrawal capacity (up to 24 million m3/day) improves the flexibility of managing gas reserves during periods of peak demand.
