A government programme to build modern RO-PAX passenger-and-vehicle ferries for Polish shipowners. The first attempt, in 2017, proved unsuccessful: a keel was laid in Szczecin without an approved design and a full contract, and the investment stalled and was criticised (an unsettled advance payment, a mark in a NIK audit). The programme was relaunched on the basis of a contract signed on 26 November 2021 with the special-purpose company Polskie Promy (owned by the State Treasury) and Gdańska Stocznia Remontowa, providing for the construction of three ferries with an option for a fourth. The first ferry, M/F Jantar Unity, was handed over to the shipowner on 17 December 2025; the subsequent vessels are to enter service in 2027 and 2028.

Significance

The programme is intended to rebuild the Polish shipbuilding industry's capacity to construct large passenger vessels and to replace the worn-out fleet of ferries serving Baltic routes. The first new ferry in decades is to sail in the colours of Polska Baltic Ferries / Unity Line on the Świnoujście–Trelleborg route linking Poland with Sweden. The LNG-powered vessels are to reduce emissions and raise the standard of passenger-and-freight transport.
