Production and servicing of K9PL self-propelled howitzers at Huta Stalowa Wola

under construction stage: announced

A programme to build at Huta Stalowa Wola (HSW) domestic servicing (MRO) capabilities, and ultimately production, of K9/K9PL self-propelled howitzers acquired from South Korea. On 10 May 2024, HSW and Hanwha Aerospace Europe signed a letter of intent extending cooperation to the service, repair and maintenance (MRO) of K9A1/K9PL howitzers and K239 Chunmu/Homar-K multiple launch rocket systems, together with technology transfer. Serial production of the K9PL in Poland was originally declared from 2026, but its full launch at HSW remains subject to further executive agreements and subsequent stages of Polonization. HSW is to serve as a regional service centre for the K9 family.

Significance

Launching the servicing and Polonization of the K9 at Huta Stalowa Wola is intended to give Poland its own capabilities to maintain, repair and modernize the Korean howitzers and, in the intention of the ministry of defence, to make the country a repair hub for Korean equipment for other European states. The common origin of the Krab and K9 chassis increases synergy with domestic barrel artillery production at HSW.
