A municipal waste thermal treatment installation in Szadółki, Gdańsk, built and operated under a public-private partnership formula. The plant, with a capacity of approximately 160 thousand tonnes of waste per year, incinerates the residual fraction (unsuitable for recycling) from Gdańsk and several dozen surrounding municipalities, producing electricity and district heating. The official opening took place on 24 March 2025. The owner of the installation is the municipal company Port Czystej Energii sp. z o.o., while the private partner responsible for the design, construction and 25-year operation is an Italian-French consortium (Webuild/Astaldi, Termomeccanica Ecologia, TIRU Paprec Energies).

Significance

The plant completes Gdańsk's waste management system, providing final thermal disposal of the non-recyclable waste fraction instead of landfilling it. It is to process approximately 160 thousand tonnes of waste per year, generating approximately 114,000 MWh of electricity and 509,000 GJ of district heating — enough to heat approximately 19 thousand households in winter, and up to 70 thousand in summer. The installation replaces fossil fuels with waste as fuel and is in line with the policy of reducing the landfilling of municipal waste.
