Polonization of K2PL tank production at ZM Bumar-Łabędy (Gliwice)

under construction stage: construction
850 mln PLN
programme budget (multi-year) · data from Oct 2025 ≈ 850 mln PLN (value-by-stage, est., nominal)

A programme to rebuild Poland's capacity to produce tanks based on a Polonized version of the Korean K2 tank — the K2PL. Under the Armament Agency's contract with Hyundai Rotem worth approximately USD 6.5 billion, the final assembly of 61 of the 64 ordered tanks in the K2PL version is to be carried out at Zakłady Mechaniczne "Bumar-Łabędy" in Gliwice, a company of the Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa. The Gliwice plant was designated as the main location following a site survey conducted by Hyundai Rotem, which assessed, among others, Wojskowe Zakłady Motoryzacyjne in Poznań and OBRUM; ZM Bumar-Łabędy received the highest rating for production capabilities. To prepare the infrastructure for the project, PGZ is recapitalizing the company with PLN 850 million from the Capital Investment Fund. In October 2025, an agreement was signed regulating the technology transfer, the construction of the assembly line, and the servicing of tanks in the country. The first K2PL tank made in Poland is to be built in 2028 and delivered to the army in 2029, while deliveries of units in the K2PL configuration are planned for 2028–2030. The supply chain includes several dozen Polish companies.

Significance

The return of serial tank production to Poland after nearly two decades and the rebuilding of domestic capacity to produce modern armoured vehicles at the Bumar-Łabędy plant in Gliwice. Launching the K2PL assembly line together with the transfer of technology, documentation and servicing processes from Hyundai Rotem strengthens Poland's defence potential and makes the maintenance of the tank fleet independent of foreign centres. The project secures and develops the industrial base and workforce competencies (experience in producing the T-72 and PT-91) in the Śląskie Voivodeship and engages a broad supply chain of Polish defence companies.
