North–South HVDC direct-current interconnection (PSE)

A planned overhead direct-current (HVDC) transmission line connecting the north of Poland with the south of the country, envisaged as one of the key projects in PSE's transmission grid development plan. It is to enable the transmission of surplus power from new sources in the north (offshore and onshore wind farms and a nuclear power plant) to industrial consumers in the south, in the Silesia region, where power is being lost due to the decommissioning of coal-fired power plants. Direct-current technology allows controlled transmission bypassing the alternating-current (AC) grid. The project is at an early stage: work on a feasibility study has been under way since 2023, and in 2025 PSE announced a tender for its preparation. The line length under consideration is approx. 600 km.

Significance

The project is to become an "energy highway" linking the north and south of the country: it would enable the evacuation of power from wind energy (offshore and onshore) and nuclear energy being developed in the north to the industrial demand centres in the south, while relieving the rest of the transmission grid. Controlled direct-current transmission is to reduce losses over long distances and increase capacity relative to alternating-current lines. It would be the first onshore HVDC line in the national power system.
