The Kosakowo Cavern Underground Gas Storage Facility (KPMG Kosakowo) is an underground natural gas storage facility located on the Gulf of Gdańsk, in the Pomorskie Voivodeship (Puck County, Kosakowo Commune). The gas is stored in caverns leached in the Permian bedded rock-salt deposit at Mechelinki, at a depth of approx. 1,000–1,200 m. The investor was PGNiG S.A., and the facility is operated by the special-purpose company Gas Storage Poland. Construction was carried out in stages from 2007; the first stage, co-financed from the EU Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment 2007–2013, closed with a total project cost of approx. PLN 514 million (including over PLN 115 million of EU funding) and a working capacity of approx. 100 million m³, and the last caverns of this stage were handed over for trial operation on 22 December 2014. In subsequent years the complex was expanded (cluster B), increasing the working capacity to over 239 million m³; the project ultimately envisaged reaching approx. 250 million m³. It is one of two cavern gas storage facilities in Poland, with high injection and withdrawal flexibility.

Significance

KPMG Kosakowo is one of two cavern underground gas storage facilities in Poland and an important element of the energy security system in the north of the country, in the vicinity of the Gdańsk LNG/FSRU supply corridor. Storing gas in salt caverns provides greater flexibility of rapid injection and withdrawal of fuel – compared with depleted-reservoir storage facilities – which allows responding to peaks in demand and market fluctuations. The expansion of the complex increased the working capacity from approx. 100 million m³ in the EU-co-financed stage to over 239 million m³, raising the country's natural gas storage capacity.
