The new, free-standing headquarters of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw at ul. Marszałkowska 103, on the northern side of Plac Defilad, next to the Palace of Culture and Science. The building, with an area of approximately 20,000 m² (including over 4,500 m² of exhibition space), with four above-ground and two underground storeys, was designed by the New York studio Thomas Phifer and Partners; it has a distinctive facade of white architectural concrete coloured throughout. The construction, carried out from 2019, was financed entirely from the funds of the Capital City of Warsaw, and the facility was opened to the public on 25 October 2024. The Supreme Audit Office (NIK) assessed the city's oversight of the investment negatively, pointing to multi-year delays and cost increases – from the originally assumed approximately PLN 270 million to over PLN 652 million.

Significance

The investment gave the Museum of Modern Art its first own, permanent headquarters after years of operating in temporary locations and became an element of the new centre of Warsaw around Plac Defilad. At the same time, it became an example of a difficult, multi-year investment process: construction dragged on through more than a dozen years of preparations, and the final cost of over PLN 652 million exceeded the original estimates by over PLN 382 million, which the Supreme Audit Office linked to a lack of proper oversight by the city, including the conclusion of contracts without full title to the land. NIK also pointed out that, owing to unfavourable provisions in the contract with architect Christian Kerez, it was not possible to enforce contractual penalties with interest of over PLN 8 million. The facility itself, however, enjoys high attendance: in less than 10 months from opening (up to August 2025), the new headquarters was visited by nearly 600,000 guests.
