A historical museum in Warsaw's Muranów district, at ul. Mordechaja Anielewicza 6, dedicated to the thousand-year history of Polish Jews. The institution was established under an agreement signed on 25 January 2005 by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the Capital City of Warsaw and the Association of the Jewish Historical Institute — as one of the first public-private partnerships in culture in Poland. The building, designed by a team of Finnish architects led by Rainer Mahlamäki, was erected between 2009 and 2013; the building was opened to the public on 19 April 2013, and the permanent exhibition "1000 Years of the History of Polish Jews" was ceremonially opened on 28 October 2014. The total cost of constructing the building, its fit-out and creating the permanent exhibition amounted to approximately PLN 320 million: the Capital City of Warsaw and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage each contributed PLN 90 million to the building, while the Association of the Jewish Historical Institute — thanks to over 500 donors from around the world — financed the permanent exhibition.

Significance

The POLIN Museum was one of the first large cultural institutions in Poland built on a public-private partnership model: the building was financed from public funds (PLN 90 million each from the Capital City of Warsaw and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage), and the permanent exhibition — from donations of the Association of the Jewish Historical Institute supported by over 500 donors from around the world. Opened on 28 October 2014 by the presidents of Poland Bronisław Komorowski and of Israel Reuven Rivlin, the permanent exhibition "1000 Years of the History of Polish Jews" made the museum the main institution documenting the history of the Jewish community in Poland. In 2016 POLIN received the title of European Museum of the Year (EMYA).
