A state historical museum in Gdańsk at pl. Władysława Bartoszewskiego 1, dedicated to the history of the Second World War. The institution was established on 1 September 2008 by an order of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage and is supervised by that ministry. The modern building was designed by the Gdynia architectural studio "Kwadrat", and the building was erected by a consortium of the companies Warbud and Hochtief (the contract for the structure itself amounted to PLN 249.9 million). In April 2015 the Council of Ministers increased the total funds for construction to PLN 448.9 million. The museum was opened to visitors on 23 March 2017; the exhibition featured approximately 2,500 exhibits and approximately 240 multimedia stations.

Significance

The construction of the Museum of the Second World War was one of the largest museum investments in Poland — the funds for it (increased in 2015 to PLN 448.9 million) came from the budget of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. Since opening, the facility has enjoyed high attendance: from 23 March to 27 December 2017 the museum was visited by 413,812 people, and on 24 November 2018 the total number of visitors exceeded one million. The project was accompanied by delays and cost increases from the original approximately PLN 360 million to almost PLN 450 million.
