Polish History Museum at the Warsaw Citadel

The new headquarters of the Polish History Museum being erected on the grounds of the Warsaw Citadel at ul. Gwardii 1 in Warsaw. The building, with an area of over 44,000 m2, was designed by the Warsaw studio WXCA, and the general contractor was Budimex. Construction works began on 6 July 2018, the building was completed in 2023, and from 29 September 2023 it was opened to visitors with temporary exhibitions. The permanent exhibition presenting the history of Poland is being created across eight thousand square metres and is to gather over three thousand exhibits; the museum's management plans to open it on 4 June 2027. According to the findings of the Supreme Audit Office (NIK), the total cost of the project together with the permanent exhibition will exceed PLN 1.2 billion, many times more than the originally assumed deadline and budget from 2015.

Significance

The investment is one of the largest and most costly ventures in the area of Polish culture: according to NIK, the total cost together with the permanent exhibition will exceed PLN 1.2 billion, many times more than assumed when the government adopted the programme in 2015 with a completion deadline of November 2019. The state audit pointed to a threefold postponement of the investment completion date and successive changes to the multi-year programme. The new headquarters at the Citadel gives the Polish History Museum its own, permanent exhibition space and makes it a key institution of the state's historical narrative.
