National FA-50 aircraft service centre at WZL Nr 2 (Bydgoszcz)

Construction of a national service centre (MRO) for KAI FA-50 combat aircraft at Wojskowe Zakłady Lotnicze Nr 2 S.A. in Bydgoszcz. On 20 June 2024, WZL Nr 2 and the South Korean company Korea Aerospace Industries signed a cooperation agreement covering logistics support, servicing, repairs, overhauls, and modernisation of the FA-50 fleet. The plant successfully passed a KAI audit, which recommends WZL Nr 2 as the main contractor for the future service contract for the FA-50GF version, with the manufacturer in the role of subcontractor. The centre is to service the 48 aircraft ordered by Poland (12 delivered FA-50GF aircraft plus a further batch in the FA-50PL version).

Significance

Establishing a national service base for the FA-50 fleet builds sovereign capability to maintain and modernise combat aircraft domestically, reducing dependence on the manufacturer over the equipment's life cycle after the warranty period. Designating WZL Nr 2 as the main contractor strengthens the position of the Bydgoszcz-based enterprise and the Polish defence industry within the programme to operate 48 FA-50 aircraft.
