The first quantum computer in Poland, launched under the European EuroHPC programme as EuroQCS-Poland. The digital machine, based on trapped-ion technology and featuring more than 20 physical qubits, was built by the Austrian company Alpine Quantum Technologies (AQT) and installed at the Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center (PCSS), affiliated with the Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences, where it is being integrated with HPC infrastructure. The formal inauguration under the name PIAST-Q took place on 23 June 2025, with resources scheduled to be made available to users by 31 December 2025. The total installation cost is EUR 12.28 million, financed equally by the EuroHPC JU and the Polish side (the Ministry of Digital Affairs and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education). Despite the relatively low cost, the investment is strategic in nature — it builds the country's first capability in quantum computing and integrates Poland into the European EuroHPC network.

Significance

PIAST-Q is the first quantum computer installed in Poland and the first device of its kind launched under the EuroHPC programme accessible from Poznań. It provides 20 physical qubits in trapped-ion technology operating at room temperature and is being integrated with the PCSS supercomputing infrastructure, which is intended to make computing power available to researchers, industry, and the public sector across Europe. Co-financing by the EuroHPC JU and two Polish ministries (Digital Affairs and Science and Higher Education) makes the investment a component of national and European quantum technology development policy — the Ministry of Digital Affairs notes that through the project Poland is joining the leaders in developing these technologies in Europe.
