A programme to build in Poland three modern multi-role frigates of project 106 (codename Miecznik) for the Polish Navy, based on the British Arrowhead 140 design by Babcock International. The ships — the future ORP Wicher, ORP Burza and ORP Huragan — are being built at the Gdynia-based PGZ Stocznia Wojenna, the technical leader of the PGZ-MIECZNIK consortium. Each vessel is approximately 138 m long with a maximum displacement of approximately 7,000 t. The construction also involved the largest investment programme in the shipyard's more than one-hundred-year history in halls, machinery and equipment. As of July 2026, all three frigates are under construction: the hull of the first (Wicher) is in advanced assembly, and work has already begun on the last (Huragan).

Significance

Miecznik is the most important post-war combat shipbuilding programme in Poland — three multi-role frigates are to replace worn-out vessels and become the backbone of the Polish Navy's combat capabilities in the Baltic. Building the vessels at the Gdynia-based PGZ Stocznia Wojenna, together with the transfer of technology from Babcock International and the largest investment programme in the shipyard's history, rebuilds national competencies in the design and production of large surface ships and maintains jobs in the Polish shipbuilding and armaments industry.
