Formation and Infrastructure of the 1st Legions Infantry Division
The formation of the fifth tactical formation of the Polish Armed Forces — the 1st Marshal Józef Piłsudski Legions Infantry Division — together with the expansion of its accompanying barracks infrastructure in the north-eastern part of the country. The decision to appoint a Ministry of National Defence plenipotentiary for the division's formation was taken by the Minister of National Defence in September 2022, and the concept for the formation, prepared by Gen. Norbert Iwanowski, was presented publicly on 9 January 2023 in Białystok. The division's command and staff were located in Ciechanów, where a separate garrison has been operating since February 2026. The new formation includes, among others, the 2nd Legions Motorized Brigade and the 2nd Legions Armoured Brigade and operates primarily in the area of the Podlaskie Voivodeship, between the areas of responsibility of the 16th and 18th Mechanized Divisions. In parallel with the formation of the subunits, infrastructure is being built — from temporary container camps (including Kolno, Wojewodzin, Czartajew, Białystok, Czerwony Bór) to permanent target infrastructure.

Significance
The fifth tactical formation in the land forces of the Polish Armed Forces, strengthening the defensive potential of the country's eastern flank at the junction of the Podlaskie, Warmińsko-Mazurskie and Mazowieckie voivodeships. The creation of the separate Ciechanów garrison and the expansion of the network of camps and barracks create a lasting logistical and training base for the new brigades and equipment, while at the same time increasing the density of the military presence toward the border with the Kaliningrad Oblast and Belarus.
