European Solidarity Centre in Gdańsk

A cultural institution and multifunctional museum and education facility at pl. Solidarności 1 in Gdańsk, next to Gate No. 2 of the Gdańsk Shipyard, dedicated to the heritage of the Solidarity movement and the anti-communist opposition in Central and Eastern Europe. The institution was established on the basis of an agreement of 8 November 2007, concluded between the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Pomorskie Voivodeship, the City of Gdańsk, the NSZZ "Solidarność" trade union and the Solidarity Centre Foundation. The construction site was handed over to the general contractor on 6 October 2010, and the ceremonial opening of the new seat took place on 30 August 2014. The architectural design was selected in a competition won by the Gdańsk studio Fort (Wojciech Targowski, Paweł Czarzasty, Piotr Mazur, Antoni Taraszkiewicz). The beneficiary and investor of the construction was the Municipality of the City of Gdańsk; the total value of the project amounted to PLN 225,809,935.46, including maximum funding from European Union funds of PLN 107,532,549.59.
