EuroHPC PL / Helios supercomputer (ACK Cyfronet AGH, Krakow)

completed stage: operational
222 mln PLN
programme budget (multi-year) · data from 2023 ≈ 222 mln PLN (value-by-stage, est., nominal) funding: European Regional Development Fund (POIR, measure 4.2), national budget

Helios is the fastest supercomputer in Poland, launched in 2024 at the Academic Computer Centre Cyfronet AGH in Krakow. It was created as part of the project "National Supercomputing Infrastructure for EuroHPC – EuroHPC PL", co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (Operational Programme Smart Growth, measure 4.2), the total value of which amounted to approx. PLN 221.9 million. The machine was designed by Cyfronet and built by Hewlett Packard Enterprise; it is Cyfronet's fifth-generation supercomputer, based among other things on NVIDIA Grace Hopper GH200 superchips and NVIDIA H100 accelerators. Helios reaches a total of approx. 36 PFLOPS of theoretical computing power and regularly ranks in the top hundred fastest and among the leading most energy-efficient supercomputers in the world (the TOP500 and Green500 lists). The EuroHPC PL project was carried out by a consortium of several centres (Krakow, Wrocław, Poznań, Gdańsk), and Helios constitutes its key element, located in Krakow. Despite a cost below the PLN 500 million threshold, the investment is strategic in character as national computing infrastructure integrated into the European EuroHPC network.

Change history

  • Apr 2024 status: completed HPE built the Helios supercomputer for ACK Cyfronet AGH — the fastest machine of its kind in Poland.
  • Apr 2024 stage: operational

Significance

Helios significantly increased the national computing potential: its total power of approx. 36 PFLOPS represents more than a fourfold increase over Cyfronet's previous flagship system. As the fastest supercomputer in Poland since 2024, it supports scientific research including in chemistry, medicine, materials technology, astronomy and climate protection, as well as artificial intelligence computations. The presence of Helios in the top hundred of the TOP500 list and among the leaders of the energy-efficient Green500 list confirms its world class, and its embedding in the EuroHPC PL programme integrates Polish infrastructure into the European network of computing resources available to scientists, industry and public administration.
