Opole Power Plant - units 1-4 (1993-1997)

completed stage: operational delivered

A district thermal power plant in Brzezie near Dobrzeń Wielki outside Opole, whose original stage comprised four power units commissioned in 1993-1997 with a combined installed capacity of 1492 MW (1×376 MW, 1×373 MW, 1×373 MW, 1×370 MW). The first unit was placed into operation on 23 February 1993, and the subsequent units in the following years through to 1997. Construction of the power plant as an investment of national significance was carried out from the 1970s. The facility is managed by PGE Górnictwo i Energetyka Konwencjonalna S.A. Oddział Elektrownia Opole. The record-breaking capacity of units 1-4 made Opole one of the largest power plants in the country; the construction of units 5 and 6 (2014-2019) was a separate, later investment.

Significance

The four units of the Opole Power Plant commissioned in 1993-1997 (1492 MW in total) were one of the largest energy investments completed in Poland in the first half of the 1990s and for years constituted one of the key sources of capacity in the National Power System. The coal-fired power plant became a pillar of energy supply in the Opole region and on a national scale, and the experience gained from its operation was the basis for the later expansion with units 5 and 6.
