The Nowy Rybnik gas-and-steam unit (CCGT) with a capacity of 882 MW is a PGE investment carried out at the site of the Rybnik Power Plant by a consortium of Polimex Mostostal and Siemens Energy. The new gas unit is to replace four coal units being shut down with a combined capacity of about 900 MW. The contract for the construction of the unit, worth about PLN 3 billion net, was concluded in 2023, and the original commissioning date for the unit was set for December 2026. Due to delays, the handover of the unit was postponed to early 2027; according to reports from 2026, construction progress had reached about 85 percent.

Significance

The investment replaces coal capacity being phased out with a low-emission gas-and-steam unit and strengthens the security of electricity supply in the Silesia region. The 882 MW unit is cited as one of the largest installations of its kind in Europe and is intended to stabilise the operation of the power system during the move away from coal.
